Bali Net Zero Emissions Coalition Highlights Grassroots Approach to Climate Adaptation and Mitigation in Bali

Ubud, October 26, 2024 – The Province of Bali, with the launch of the Bali Net Zero Emissions initiative in August 2023, has reaffirmed its commitment to becoming a leading province in achieving net zero emissions by 2045. This initiative builds on Bali Governor Regulation No. 45 of 2019 on Clean Energy and serves as a milestone in the province’s green development journey. It reflects the intersection of government policy and grassroots innovation, where communities and development partners collaborate to adopt data-driven solutions rooted in Bali’s cultural values.

To strengthen collective efforts in reducing carbon emissions and fostering a cleaner, healthier environment, the Bali Net Zero Emissions Coalition (Bali NZE Coalition) held a public discussion and talk show titled “Bali Net Zero Emissions Coalition: A Collaborative Effort to Transform Climate Ambition into Action” as part of the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) on October 26, 2024. The event, hosted at Taman Baca in Ubud, featured members of the coalition, including World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), New Energy Nexus (NEX) Indonesia, CAST Foundation, and local community representatives. The discussion was moderated by journalist and women’s rights activist Ni Ketut Sudiani.

Key Highlights and Statements

Sofwan Hakim, Head of Secretariat, Bali Net Zero Emissions Coalition:
“Achieving Bali’s target of net zero emissions by 2045 requires the support and participation of the government, stakeholders, and the broader Balinese community. The Coalition advocates for policies grounded in Bali’s harmonious cultural values while fostering local collaborations to develop sustainable solutions. Our focus is on implementing low-carbon technologies, promoting a just energy transition, and positioning Bali as a sub-national pilot model for net zero policies and actions.”

Erlangga Bayu, Founder and Director, BTI Energy and Electric Wheel:
Erlangga esplains the establishment of a solar-powered EV battery charging station in Peliatan Village through a collaboration with WRI Indonesia. Managed by the local Village-Owned Enterprise, the station operates under a sustainable business model where revenues are reinvested in facility maintenance and community needs.
“With this initiative, we hope other villages adopt similar technologies, enabling broader benefits and contributing to reduced congestion and low-emission zones in Ubud.”

Marlistya Citraningrum, Manajer Program Akses Energi Berkelanjutan IESR

Marlistya Citraningrum, Sustainable Energy Access Program Manager, IESR:
“Renewable energy is a strategic pathway for Bali to achieve net zero emissions by 2045. Bali has a technical potential of 143 GW in renewable energy. Our efforts include creating a roadmap for Nusa Penida to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030. This involves mobilizing investments, fostering collaboration, and encouraging community participation in initiatives like rooftop solar installations. Local leadership must prioritize these efforts to strengthen Bali’s commitment to sustainability.”

Ni Nyoman Rida Bimastini (Ima), Co-founder & CMO MagiFarm

Ni Nyoman Rida Bimastini (Ima), Co-founder & CMO, MagiFarm:
NEX Indonesia and MagiFarm are working with grassroots communities on climate innovations, such as food waste management.
“Most waste in Bali is organic and can produce methane if untreated. Using black soldier fly larvae to process organic waste efficiently, we aim to establish small-scale waste management facilities in villages across Bali. This community-driven solution requires support from businesses, governments, and stakeholders to scale and make a meaningful impact.”

Tafia Sabila Khairunnisa, Design Researcher di Fab Lab Bali

Tafia Sabila Khairunnisa, Design Researcher, Fab Lab Bali:
“Collaborating with CAST Foundation in Serangan, we apply a co-creation approach to technology development, empowering communities as co-creators in problem-solving and capacity building. By introducing digital fabrication and ‘learning through making,’ we envision each village as a sustainable innovation hub, enhancing resilience and fostering regenerative economies.”
