New Energy Nexus Indonesia, Olat Maras Power, and Volto Sea Drive Clean Energy Transition for Coastal Fishing Communities in Sumbawa

Sumbawa, Indonesia – April 11, 2025 – New Energy Nexus Indonesia, in collaboration with Olat Maras Power and Volto Sea, launched a technology trial to decarbonize coastal community pilot project, featuring electric boat motors and solar-powered cold storage systems in Bungin Island, Sumbawa. The project aims to bring clean energy technology to the coastal fishing sector by introducing 12 solar-powered cold storage units from Olat Maras Power, two electric outboard motors from Volto Sea, and a hybrid-powered battery charging hub to Bungin Village.

With over 3,500 residents—1,000 of whom are active fishers—Bungin Island faces urgent economic and environmental challenges. This pilot trial is designed to support the local economy, improve livelihoods, and protect marine ecosystems while reducing carbon emissions.

“Introducing electric boats and solar-powered cold storage is a timely response to the economic vulnerabilities and climate crisis impacting Indonesia’s coastal regions,” said Kevin Felix, Senior Program Associate at New Energy Nexus Indonesia and coordinator of the initiative. “Together with a hybrid charging hub, these technologies can drive real change, building resilience and improving quality of life for fishing communities.”

The pilot began with a comprehensive feasibility study, involving over 50 respondents and 22 stakeholders—including fishers, fish collectors, aquaculture operators, restaurant owners, village officials, and local SMEs. The study highlighted high energy costs, limited awareness of green technologies, and economic losses due to rapid fish spoilage caused by inadequate storage facilities.

To address these issues, the project integrates education, financing, and hands-on field testing. Its approach includes community workshops, product demonstrations, and public awareness campaigns.

As part of the trial, Olat Maras Power deployed 12 solar-powered cold storage units to help reduce fish spoilage and daily electricity expenses. Volto Sea introduced electric outboard motors to replace expensive fossil fuel engines.

“We’ve seen firsthand how much loss fisherfolks experience due to inadequate storage,” said Nova Aryanto, CEO of Olat Maras Power. “Our solar cold storage helps maintain catch quality and cuts daily operating costs. Fishers can save up to IDR 30 million and reduce up to 12.5 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.”

“The sea is the heartbeat of life in Bungin,” said Yindy Kurniawan, CEO of Volto Sea. “By replacing fossil fuel engines with electric motors, we’re not just offering innovation—we’re honoring the maritime way of life and supporting a more sustainable future.”

The use of electric boat motors alone is projected to help fishers save up to IDR 37 million and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 14.5 tons annually. With testing underway, the pilot is showing strong potential for expansion and further optimization.

“We welcome this program as a first step toward building an energy-independent and environmentally friendly coastal village,” said Jaelani, Head of Bungin Village. “This isn’t just about technology—it’s about securing the future for our children and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our local economy.”

To scale the impact and ensure long-term sustainability, the project team is also exploring flexible financing schemes, engaging youth in climate action, and collaborating with government stakeholders to advance coastal decarbonization efforts across Indonesia.

“The Bungin Island pilot is a collective movement to lead Indonesia’s coastal fisheries sector toward a more sustainable future through clean energy adoption,” Kevin concluded.
