NEX STEP XChange: Empowering Youth to take part in shaping Indonesia’s Energy Transition Policies

26 March 2024, Jakarta – The transition to clean energy is a pressing global concern, particularly as the impacts of climate change become more evident. Indonesia has committed to addressing this by aiming for Net Zero Emissions by 2060. However, achieving this goal will be challenging if the development of energy transition at the sub-national level is neglected or falls behind.

As the next generation of leaders, young people play a pivotal role in propelling Indonesia’s energy transition forward. There’s a notable surge in environmental consciousness among youth, particularly regarding the climate crisis. This trend is underscored by findings from the Indonesian Political Indicator survey, revealing that 82% of Gen-Z and millennials are aware of the climate crisis.

Despite the pressing need for action, a significant portion of today’s youth remains disconnected from local climate policy initiatives, notably in areas concerning the transition to sustainable energy.

New Energy Nexus (NEX) Indonesia organizes the NEX STEP XChange – Sustainable Energy Policy XChange program, aimed at empowering young individuals to actively participate in shaping Indonesia’s energy transition policies.

The NEX STEP XChange program empowers young innovators to lead the clean energy transition through four activities. These include two competitions: a policy debate for university students in East Java and a case competition for youth in Jakarta, West Java, and DI Yogyakarta. Winners will share a total prize pool of IDR 56,000,000 and gain access to dialogues with policymakers on energy transition. They wil also have networking opportunities with cleantech stakeholders, professionals, startup founders, and policymakers.

Young individuals from six regions, namely DKI Jakarta, West Java, East Java, Bali, DI Yogyakarta, and East Nusa Tenggara, are invited to participate in the NEX STEP XChange policy workshop. This event aims to bolster their capacity in crafting region-specific policies to bolster the energy transition. The workshop will feature expert-led sessions, interactive case studies, and collaborative policy labs tailored to each region’s needs.

“The purpose of NEX STEP XChange is to empower young individuals as key agents driving critical policy reforms for Indonesia’s energy transition in the future.” said Diyanto Imam, Program Director of New Energy Nexus Indonesia

NEX STEP XChange will partner with four local organizations: SRE Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), SRE Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), SRE University of Indonesia (UI), and SRE Gadjah Mada University (UGM).

The event will be held across various locations, starting in West Java (March 26th – May 18th, 2024), followed by East Java (March 29th – June 9th, 2024), and DKI Jakarta (April – June 2024). Subsequently, it will proceed to Bali (June 2024), DI Yogyakarta (July 29th – September 28th, 2024), and finally East Nusa Tenggara (September 2024).
